Buddhadeb Dasgupta: Nandita Das Wanted Me To Adapt Tagore Onscreen

10th December 2010

December 10, 2010 (Sampurn Wire): Bengali film director and author Buddhadeb Dasgupta will soon be making his third Hindi feature film and this time he has chosen a Rabindranath Tagore work for the big screen. According to reports circulating in the media, Buddhadeb Dasgupta will adapt Rabindranath Tagores Sey, which is to be named 'Woh' in Hindi. In a statement to the media, the filmmaker says that actress Nandita Das is his inspiration behind choosing Sey for the big screen. Though not literally, but it was the talented actress who had first suggested the master director to adapt a Tagore work to mark the 150th birth anniversary celebrations of the litterateur.

And since it was a childrens film that Nandita Das had wanted him to do, Buddhadeb Dasgupta first rounded up on Dakghar as his third Hindi project. As an afterthought, Buddhadeb Dasgupta considered that Dakghar had already been adapted for the big screen and hence comparisons will evidently crop up. Therefore it was Sey for the National Award winning filmmaker. Sey narrates a conversation between a grandfather and his grandchild and the stories that he narrates to the child about a fictitious character. While Barun Chanda is Buddhadeb Dasguptas grandfather, Aratrika Ghosh plays the child and Ashok Shivpuri plays Sey, the fictional character of the grandfather.

Buddhadeb Dasgupta has worked in earlier Hindi films like Andhi Gali and Bagh Bahadur.
