Channing Tatum: Romance roles were necessary

11th January 2012

Channing Tatum is "conscious" about taking on a number of romantic dramas in his film career.

The actor has discussed his varying movie parts in the February edition of Details magazine. Although romance isn't Channing's ideal genre of movie to star in, he believes his involvement in the projects were a fundamental learning experience.

"You gotta do the Dear John's. You gotta do The Vow. I'm conscious about why I did those parts, those movies," he told the publication.

"I wanted to learn from Rachel McAdams on The Vow. I wanted to learn from Lasse Hallstrm on Dear John - he did The Cider House Rules and What's Eating Gilbert Grape. I didn't go to acting school, so my knowledge of story, filmmaking and character comes from just being on set and doing it."

Channing hopes to have more involvement in the direction of his career moving forward. The 31-year-old star is still keeping his options open when it comes to his favourite filmmakers.

"I really don't want to be in any more movies that I don't produce," he said.

"Unless it's with one of the ten directors that I really want to work with, I don't have any interest in not being on the ground floor of creating it."

Channing collaborated with director Steven Soderbergh on the upcoming movie Magic Mike. The film is loosely based on Channing's time spent as a stripper before he made it big in Hollywood.

"To clarify, it's not really my story," he explained.

"It's really about that world: the people and the decisions you have to make. It's not as dark as you might think. Soderbergh really had a clear vision as far as not making it overly sexual, overly dark."
