Renowned actor and playwright Girish Karnad passed away at the age of 81 on June 10, 2019 in Bengaluru. As per reports he passed away due to prolonged illness, besides this nothing much has been revealed.  

He was bestowed with several prestigious awards for his contribution towards literature and cinema, such as Sangeet Natak Akademi award and Varthur navya Award, Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, Kannada Sahitya, Parishat Award, Sahitya Academy award, Jnanpith Award, Kalidas Samman, Rajyotsava Award and National Awards.
