Dawn French: Im proud of my body

31st December 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Dawn French refuses to lose weight as she has better things to do with her life.

The 53-year-old comedienne has been a regular on television for over 20 years, first as one half of comedy duo French and Saunders then solo in successful UK sitcom The Vicar of Dibley. She has also completed praised theatre stints in 2007 and 2010.

Throughout her career Dawn has always had a fuller figure, a situation she doesnt see changing anytime soon. Dawn believes she shouldnt conform to societys pressures of being thin, insisting she is completely comfortable with her size.

Being a fat woman is a choice. I could be thinner if I wanted to be, if I devoted time to thinking about it, but Im choosing to do other things. The time may come when I have to pay attention to it, if my life is in danger or if I cant physically do what I want. But I would never, for instance, diet for some bloke or anything like that, she said.

Dawn went on to reiterate that far from suffering she has enjoyed major perks thanks to her weight. The actress believes she is the person she is today due to her body shape and she wouldnt have it any other way. Dawn added thinner women sometimes find it hard to come to terms with changes to their bodies as they get older.

Theres a weird thing about me. Being a big girl, I didnt have any of those big sorrows at 30 or 40 about my body you know, about sagging, etc. because my body was sagging in my 20s. Im not mourning a loss of control over my physicality, she concluded. (C) Cover Media
