Dominic Cooper: Working with Frears was wonderful

6th September 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Dominic Cooper says he was “in safe hands” making his new movie directed by the “wonderfully experienced” Stephen Frears.

The 32-year-old British actor plays a womanising rock star in Tamara Drewe, with actress Gemma Arterton playing his love interest and title character.

The film has been adapted from a series of cartoons which were published in British newspaper The Guardian on a weekly basis from 2005 to 2006.

Dominic admits there were dangers in making the characters seem too cartoon-like, but he thinks this was avoided thanks to the talent of celebrated director Stephen.

“You know you’re in safe hands. He’s got an absolute vision of how he sees it. He’s got a beginning, middle, and an end. He’s editing it as it goes along and it’s very difficult to place this comedy so it doesn’t become a caricature. He’s wonderfully experienced,” Dominic told the BBC.

Stephen, 69, is best known for his Oscar-nominated movie The Queen, which stars Dame Helen Mirren as British monarch Queen Elizabeth II and documents the events following the death of Princess Diana in 1997.

Dominic is proud to have made a movie with such a legendary director, and says he thinks it offers something very different to typical British films, which often depict working class society.

“It’s something you very rarely get to see in British cinema – a snapshot of middle class society in the countryside who aesthetically on the outside seem perfect but inside it’s all crumbling to pieces and everyone’s lying to each other,” revealed the actor. (C) Cover Media
