Friends creator: We contemplated ending

23rd October 2012

Friends creator David Crane has revealed Ross and Rachel almost ended up apart when the final season was being written.

Throughout the ten series of the popular US TV show, Rachel Green and Ross Geller's on-off romance kept viewers hooked. Audiences were thrilled to see the pair finally come together as a happy family with their daughter Emma.

However, David has confessed that scriptwriters considered keeping the romance open-ended, so viewers would be left guessing.

"There was always that question about do we get Ross and Rachel together? At first we thought that [getting them together] seems so expected," he explained in a clip from the Friends Blu-ray set. "[We thought about a] vague, They are not together but there is hope for the future. And then we were like, Screw that! People have waited ten years for this! Let's give them what they want and let's do it really well."

In the final episodes, Ross begged Rachel to stay in New York with him after she landed a new job in Paris. Despite initially deciding she wanted to relocate, Rachel changed her mind at the last minute and agreed to give her relationship with Ross another shot.

Friends starring Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, Matthew Perry and Lisa Kudrow ran from 1994 to 2004. All the cast members became global stars and raked in an impressive $1 million per episode in the final two seasons.
