Gael Garca Bernal: Ferrell speaks awesome Spanish

20th January 2012

Gael Garca Bernal is impressed by Will Ferrell's linguistic skills.

The Mexican actor co-stars with Will in upcoming Spanish language comedy Casa de Mi Padre.

Will plays Armando Alvarez, an heir to a ranch who ends up in battle with Mexico's biggest drug lord.

Gael was impressed by the way Will adopted the native tongue for this role.

"He speaks Spanish fantastically well," Gael told E! Online. "He speaks it really really well."

Casa de Mi Padre is a parody of telenovelas, very maudlin and expressive Spanish soap operas.

Gael thinks Will's skills were perfect for this genre.

"I think deep down inside, Will has always wanted to be a telenovela actor," Gael said. "This is his chance of doing it."

Will did not strictly adhere to a script in this film. The actor embraced improvisation, even though Spanish is not his first language.

"There was a lot of improv," Gael explained. "Whenever he had to improvise, it was fantastic. It takes a lot of work to improvise in another language that is not your mother tongue. I have difficulties doing it any other language but Spanish, but Will managed quite well. He made it very funny."

Casa de Mi Padre will be released in the US in March.
