(Cover) - EN Showbiz - George Michael broke down after his first night in jail on Tuesday.
The 47-year-old singer was jailed on Tuesday after he pleaded guilty to possessing cannabis and driving under the influence of drink or drugs. He was visibly shocked when the judge sentenced him to eight weeks in prison, and reportedly burst into tears as soon as he was locked in the holding cell at London's Highbury Corner Magistrates' Court.
He was later transferred to Pentonville prison, where he was put in the Vulnerable Prisoners Unit for his own safety. George was reportedly heard sobbing throughout the night, and was particularly upset when his fellow prisoners started taunting him by singing some of his biggest hits.
"When he went to use a payphone in the communal area he was hunched over it - distraught and in tears. He was whispering and very emotional, a source told British newspaper The Sun.
"George was bombarded with mickey-taking songs from the cons. He was crying as they sang, 'You've got to have faith,' at him."
As soon as he arrived some of the prisoners burst into a rendition of Freedom, another source told British newspaper The Daily Mirror. "And when he was taken to shower they sang, 'Guilty George has got no freedom,' to the tune of Careless Whisper.
George was reportedly so distraught, he was checked every 30 minutes during the night because prison guards were worried about his mental health. The star made it through the night, but was still in poor spirits when he was woken in the morning.
In addition to his jail time, which will be served as four weeks in prison then the rest of his sentence out on licence, George was hit with a five-year driving ban, fined 1,250 and ordered to pay 100 costs plus a 15 "victim surcharge".
George had previously pleaded guilty to the charges, which relate to his arrest on July 4 in the Hampstead area of London following a car crash.
At 3.35am on July 4 George lost control of his Range Rover and smashed it into a photo shop near his home. The crash buckled a door frame and shattered windows of the Snappy Snaps shop in the upmarket suburb.
CCTV footage showed a shocked George climbing out of the vehicle to wait for police.
George was not breathalysed, but was held on suspicion of being unfit to drive. He then underwent drug tests at a police station.
George was banned from driving for 24 months after he was found slumped at the wheel of his car in Cricklewood, North West London, in May 2007. He admitted he had taken illicit substances. He was also cautioned for possessing Class A and C drugs in 2008. (C) Cover Media
