Best known as Ra.One these days, Arjun Rampal turns 39 today! The once fashion model is known for playing depressed characters with a disturbed state of mind.
Born on November 26, 1972, to Indian father, Amarjeet Singh Rampal and Dutch mother, Gwen Rampal, in Jabalpur (Madhya Pradesh, India), Arjun belongs to a Ramgarhiya Sikh family. he was discovered in a Discotheque in Delhi by designger Rohit Bal. Arjun was studying at Hindu College, Delhi then. Arjun became Rohit's protege, who promoted him to the extent that he became one of India's most sought after male supermodels.
Rajiv Rai cast Arjun in a music video named Don't Marry with model Namrata Baruwah and launched him in Pyaar, Ishq aur Mohabbat with Keerti Reddy, Suniel Shetty and Aftab Shivdasani. Ideally, his debut was Moksh, with Manisha Koirala. But it was released after the release of Pyaar, Ishq aur Mohabbat. Both the movies didn't do well at the box office, but earned him many acting offers.
Ever since, he has worked steadily in films, some successful and some not. He was also a part of the Temptations 2004 Concert with Shah Rukh Khan, Rani Mukherji, Saif Ali Khan, Preity Zinta and Priyanka Chopra. After making extending appearance in Karan Johar's Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Farhan Akhtar's Don - The Case Begins Again (a remake of 1978 Amitabh Bachchan starrer Don), he produced I See You in 2006, which received pretty negative reviews.
In 2007, he did a negative role in Farha Khan's Om Shanti Om (OSO), which earned plenty positive reviews for the film as well as his character. OSO has been his biggest hit till date, for which he also won several awards. Arjun was also a double winner (Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award and National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor) for his character, Joe Mascarenhas, in Farhan Akhtar's 2008 Musical Hit Rock On!!. Recently he was seen in Shah Rukh Khan's sci-fi actin thriller Ra.One as the final face of the super villain, who is a modern version of the mythological identity Raavan.
Few of his noted films are Deewanapan (2001), Aankhen (2002), Dil Hai Tumhara (2002), Dil Ka Rishta (2003), Vaada (2005), Ek Ajnabee (2005), Honeymoon Travels Pvt. Ltd. Currently he's working on The Legend of Kunal (a story based on the life of King Ashoka's son - Kunal), Heroine (Madhur Bhandarkar's next, reportedly based on the lives of yesteryear's divas like Madhubala and Marilyn Monroe) and Durbar, all set to release in 2012.
Arjun is married Mehr Jesia, former Miss India, and two daughter with her, Mahikaa and Myra. Mehr has co-produced I See You with him. Arjun says that his daughters are his lucky charm. Though his films are not a success at the box office, he is always appreciated for his work. After all, he has a triple lady luck with him, which adds furthermore to the occassion of his birthday!
