Boman Irani very well known for his portrayal of Dr Asthana a cynical doctor in 'Munnabhai MBBS' celebrates his 49th birthday today. Boman Irani was born in 1962, in Mumbai, Maharashtra. He is married to Zenobia and has two sons. He used to run a family owned bakery and had also started his own brand of potato chips.
He started his career as a professional photographer and was soon recognized in the fashion world. Later on he expanded his career to theatres,which he was always passionate about.
Irani's love of acting was always present even during school and college. He trained under acting coach Hansraj Siddhia from 1981 to 1983 and adopted professional acting methods. Unlike other actors who preferred national theatre ,Irani preferred British theatre and he soon developed different accents. Irani's mentor was Alyque Padamsee -and the first break he got in theatre was in Alyque Padamsee's play 'Roshni'. He was introduced to Padamsee by ace choreographer Shiamak Davar.
Post 'Munnabhai MBBS' fame, Boman gave several great performances in character roles. With the sequel of 'Lage Raho Munna Bhai' (2006), He was noticed more and later he received accolades for his portrayal of a negative character of Khurana in 'Khosla Ka Ghosla' (2006) and 'Being Cyrus' (2006). He also played the role of a policeman in Shah Rukh Khan's 'Don'. He also did an off-beat film like 'Home Delivery' (2005). Boman Irani has done both parallel and commercial cinema with same panache. For example, in 2005 Boman Irani did everything from mainstream films like Page 3 to Waqt and No Entry, from an arty film Maine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara to an off-beat My Wife’s Murder. Boman Irani had a comparatively quiet year in 2007, where he acted in 2 multi -starrer films Honeymoon Travels ltd. and Hey Babyy. His performance in Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Eklavya was well appreciated and the film was India’s entry in the Oscars.
In 2008 Boman Irani was seen in Harry Baweja’s Love Story 2050, Kismet Konnection and will be seen in Subhash Ghai’s Yuvraaj.
Standing tall at 6 feet 3 inches he is one of the tallest actors in Bollywood.

He also appeared in a special episode of Kaun Banega Crorepati season 3 along with Sanjay Dutt, where Shah Rukh Khan was the Host. He has also appeared in a number of advertisements like Nerolac, M-Seal, Rin Supreme, Tata Sky services and is also a brand ambassador for Tata Salt. In 2008, hosted a Quiz show for Filmy called Bollywood Ka Boss. His versatility in acting reflects in the fact that the varied roles he has played ranging from father, friend, uncle, doctor, corrupt businessman, eccentric murderer and police officer.
