Jamie Lee Curtis: Charity work is important to me

25th October 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Jamie Lee Curtis has been moved to get involved with breast cancer and childrens charities, and says the work is one of the most important things she does.

The actress is a spokeswoman for Give Hope with Every Cup, an initiative set up by the National Breast Cancer Foundation and Dannon to mark National Breast Cancer Awareness Month, which is October. The partnership has seen Dannon promise to donate at least $500,000 to the foundation, with the company giving ten cents for every code from a products lid entered onto a website by customers.

The cash will be used to promote breast care, and help provide women with screening. Jamie is passionate about the organisation, and explained why charity work is so important to her.

You get involved because of your heart... You're moved to do it, she explained. Anyone who's sat with a woman going through breast cancer treatment or with a child undergoing a procedure in the hospital knows that there is nothing more helpless than that moment.

For me, there is no more important work - besides being a good mom to my kids - than using my celebrity to get more exposure for a specific cause such as this. As a public figure, my job is to spread this good word.

The 51-year-old had her own breast cancer scare several years ago, which is another reason she is involved in the initiative. It made her realise she is lucky to be able to afford good healthcare have access to impressive doctors, something she knows not all women have.

There is not a woman alive who hasn't had some contact with breast cancer, either through a friend or through her own experience with it, she told USA Today. I had my own personal moment of truth ten years ago when I had a biopsy done on a small, questionable lump in my breast. It was scary. (C) Cover Media
