Jared Followill: People dislike our success

29th December 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Kings of Leon bassist Jared Followill believes popular musicians are seen as boring or hated.

The Nashville four-piece have enjoyed a steady rise to the top, following early releases Youth and Young Manhood and Aha Shake Heartbreak.

But Jared says the band - currently promoting fifth album Come Around Sundown - have had a negative reaction since hitting the big time.

They put us on the big screen - and everybody booed us, he told British newspaper The Times, when speaking about what happened at a local sporting event. When you become famous as a musician, youre either boring, or youre disliked.

And his brother, lead singer Caleb Followill, admitted that he argued with their cousin Matthew, the groups drummer, whether they should release one of their biggest hits Sex on Fire.

Caleb believed that the tune was too commercial and might be seen as a novelty.

I resisted putting Sex on Fire on the [Only by the Night] album until the very last minute, he said. Matthew wanted it on - he saw the hit potential in it. I didnt want it on because I saw the hit potential in it... I didnt want a song like that to define us.

He worries that, in years to come, Kings of Leon will be known only for that hit - even though they realise the lyrics dont make much sense.

I dont want people to be going Oh, youre the Sex on Fire band. Because none of us truly believes that our sex is on fire ... or that your sex is on fire, Caleb said. (C) Cover Media
