Katy Perry: I’m accountable to God

6th September 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Katy Perry thinks too many female singers have no one to be “accountable” to.

The US star had a religious upbringing, and her parents Keith and Mary are both preachers. Katy is proud of her background, and says it is one of the things which marks her out as different from other artists. She was raised with a strong sense of right and wrong, which impacts all the life decisions she makes.

“There are examples of female singers now who are wildly talented, and they have nobody to be accountable to any more, and were never fully developed,” she explained. “With me, I grew up with, yeah, a sheltered background, but I had to be accountable to myself; I had to be accountable to God, in a way, and to moral integrity. And I think I was fortunate to grow up with that.”

Katy’s childhood was sheltered. She attended religious camps and wasn’t allowed to listen to chart music. Instead she played Christian songs at home, which are what inspired her to become a singer. The artists she heard as a kid wanted to help improve people’s lives, which is something the 25-year-old has taken on board.

She insists she didn’t break into the industry to become famous, but rather because she wanted to tell stories which would appeal to people. (C) Cover Media
