Kerry Washington: Lopez inspired me

1st February 2012

Kerry Washington wouldn't have "taken a risk in [her] career" if it wasn't for Jennifer Lopez.

The star was motivated to appear on the big screen after singer-and-actress Jennifer paved the way in Hollywood.

Kerry has since made a name for herself in films including Ray, The Last King of Scotland and Fantastic Four. She credits Jennifer as her main source of inspiration.

"I grew up blocks away from Jennifer Lopez. She and I went to the same Boys & Girls Club. She was like the dancer who made it big and moved to Hollywood," she revealed in the March edition of Essence magazine.

Kerry added years later when they met, she told Jennifer: "I don't know if I would've taken a risk in my career if it weren't for you."

Kerry will be honoured at the 5th annual Essence Black Women in Hollywood Luncheon later this month. She will join Pam Grier, Shonda Rhimes, Paula Patton and Octavia Spencer - who will all be celebrated for their work within the film and television industries.

The stunning star is thrilled to be recognised for her input.

"I think it's a really special time to be a woman of colour in this business," she told the publication.

"The landscape of who has the power is changing. We are in more influential positions and are able to have a say in the stories that are told. I feel very lucky to be in the business now".
