(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Madonna is reportedly going to play at this year's Super Bowl.

According to sports blog SBNation.com the Queen of Pop will perform during the halftime show at the iconic American football match, Super Bowl XLVI.

A spokesperson for the National Football League (NFL) would not confirm or deny the rumour.

"We don't comment on musical acts until we make the official announcement," they told E! Online.

Madonna and her team have yet to comment on the report.

However, this isn't the first time that Madonna has been suggested as the headliner for the sporting event.

In 1998 the singer was rumoured to be performing at Super Bowl XXXIII in Miami, but sadly the plans fell apart before a deal was reached.

She was brought in again, just two years later for Super Bowl XXXV, but she backed out at the last minute.

Recently Madonna has stepped back from her musical career and tried her hand at directing. The 53-year-old's first major film W.E. is released later this year. It follows the romance between Wallis Simpson and Britain's King Edward VIII.

Past performers at the Super Bowl include The Black Eyed Peas and Usher as well as legendary acts including The Rolling Stones, The Who and Slash.

The Super Bowl was also the platform for Janet Jackson's memorable wardrobe malfunction in 2004 whilst performing alongside Justin Timberlake.

This year's Super Bowl is being held at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis on February 5. (C) Cover Media
