Mary-Kate Olsen hair tips

(Cover) - EN Star Style - A top celebrity stylist has revealed the secret to creating Mary-Kate Olsen's edgy half up-do.

The fashionista and her twin sister Ashley attended the prestigious Council of Fashion Designers of America (CDFA) Awards in New York on Monday. The designer pair were nominated for their collection The Row but lost out to Prabal Gurung.

Mary-Kate, who wore a skirt from her own clothing line teamed with Louis Vuitton shoes, and a gold Chanel Haute Couture jacket, was rocking an edgy half up-do on the night, and celebrity hair stylist Mark Townsend has revealed the secrets to help re-create the style at home.

The hair expert says the 24-year-old star's attire was the inspiration behind her tresses.

"Her Chanel jacket is the height of fashion! There is something so young and fun and whimsical about it, so I wanted her hair to feel the same way. By creating the voluminous texture at the top and turning the hair into a bun, it adds a fresh and modern spin to the classic half up/half down style," he said in an interview with US weekly.

Mark says the look is easy to achieve at home. He advises combing a few drops of Dove Nourishing Oil Care Serum through damp hair to "smooth any frizz and add shine".

He also advises adding lashings of mousse to the hair to "help create long-lasting, defined texture without leaving hair too stiff or sticky". Next, blow out the top of the hair with a round brush to create volume at the crown of the head and rub dry shampoo powder at the roots to help give the roots a boost too.

Mark says the next step after prepping the hair is to gather it up into the half up style. The stylist says the most important part is finishing the style with a good hairspray to make sure it lasts.

"Gather the top and sides of the hair into the middle of the head and secure it into a bun while leaving the bottom half of the hair loose and long," he explained. "Finish with a firm-hold hairspray to make sure the style stays in place, but still has lots of movement." (C) Cover Media
