Michael Bay: 3D is a new toy

(Cover) - EN Movies - Michael Bay says James Cameron taught him that 3D technology is "a toy" for moviemakers.

Directors-and-producers Michael and James recently hosted the 3D: A Transforming Visual Art event at the Paramount Theater in Hollywood, where they discussed the role 3D has in the future of cinema.

Michael has worked with 3D for Transformers: Dark of the Moon, set for release this summer, while James famously mastered the artform in 2009 blockbuster Avatar. Michael was happy to learn about the technological method from James, and was encouraged to appreciate the fun side of it.

"I first met James Cameron on the set of Titanic, and he invited me on the set of Avatar. At first I thought 3D was harder than you could imagine, and really not me. Really not me. I'm old school, I like 35mm film where you can touch it, you can feel it. 3D is just all ones and zeros. When I got on set James said he wanted to show me some cool algorithms, and I was like 'What?'" laughed Michael.

"James explained it to me like 3D is just a new toy to play with."

James thinks it's interesting how 3D is interpreted differently by various moviemakers. He admits that his methods for Avatar were particularly experimental.

"Every filmmaker is going to use 3D differently. Avatar was at the time just a science experiment," he smiled. (C) Cover Media
