(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Michael Douglas says he is angry that his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones was outed and forced to reveal her battle with bipolar disorder.
The actor is furious Catherine was put under pressure to confirm she had been treated at the Silver Hill psychiatric hospital in Connecticut for bipolar II disorder, which is characterised by long periods of depression and bursts of mania. Michael claims his wife should have been given more privacy by a US publication who reported her stay at the facility earlier this month.
When asked about Catherines illness by Oprah Winfrey in a television interview due to air today, Michael fumed, She was outed.
Catherines decision to get help came after a tough year for the 41-year-old star, during which Michael was treated for stage four throat cancer and his son Cameron sent to jail on drug charges.
Michael who still undergoes monthly check-ups - has confirmed their personal difficulties took their toll on the star and he says Catherine found it difficult to discuss her issues.
"My oldest son is in federal prison, my ex-wife is suing me, and I got cancer. It's kind of hard for the wife to say, 'I'm depressed,'" he explained.
The 66-year-old actor is proud of his wife for seeking medical attention and insists the couple are now moving on with their lives. Catherine has returned to work and is currently shooting her new movie Playing the Field in Louisiana, alongside Gerard Butler.
It takes a lot of courage to seek help and I am proud of Catherine for doing something positive about her situation, Michael added. It's onwards and upwards for us. (C) Cover Media
