Born as Mayte Michelle Rodriguez in San Antonia, Texas to an Espinal mother and a Puerto Rican father, she calls herself an American. Moving places as a child, Michelle dropped out of school but later completed her education. She also got into business to take up a career in writing and direction but later quit to take up acting as a career.

Starting off with the movie 'Girlfight', where she played the character of Diana Guzman, it was then that Rodriguez accumalated several awards and nominations for her performance. Later most of her roles were based on traditional male fields such as the police force or armed forces.
