Opening Night Film Wednesday, November 10, 2010:
NOISE (Shor), directed by Raj Nidimoru and Krishna DK, is a gritty, satirical drama inspired by various daily newspaper stories. It revolves around three stories set during the popular and chaotic Ganesha festival in Mumbai. An expatriate returning 'home' is forced to come to terms with the fact that he is alone in an unwelcoming city. A scamster, who bootlegs the latest bestsellers, and his unruly buddies find a bag of explosives in a local train. This sets them on an adventure to find an empty space in the overcrowded city to blast the bomb for kicks. In a city where corruption is a way of life, a young cricketer has no qualms paying the price to get into the cricket team. He must find the money first. Noise was submitted to MIACC as a short film in 2008, and it was awarded the Best Short Film Award at that festival. The films stars include Tusshar Kapoor, Sendhil Ramamurthy (Its a Wonderful Afterlife, NBC series Heroes), and Nikhil Dwivedi (Raavana).
The opening night film will be preceded by a star-studded red carpet event at the SVA Theatre (333 W. 23rd St., between 8th and 9th Avenues) in Chelsea and followed by an IAAC Benefit Gala Dinner at The Metropolitan Pavilion.
Centerpiece Film Friday, November 12, 2010:
MEMORIES IN MARCH, directed by Sanjoy Nag, is the story of Arati Mishra. Her world comes crashing down on her when her beloved son, Siddhartha, a successful copywriter in his twenties living in Kolkata, is killed in a fatal car accident. When she arrives in Kolkata to collect his possessions, she is brought deeper into his world when she meets his colleagues and is surrounded by his belongings. As the memories of her dearly departed son flood Aratis thoughts, she discovers a surprising part of Siddharthas life that she refuses to accept. Arati must reevaluate the close relationship they used to have and discovers a part of her son she never knew or thought could be. Memories in Marchs exceptional star cast includes: Rituparno Ghosh, Deepti Naval, Raima Sen, and Pradeep Rai. This film will also be shown at the SVA Theater, is co-hosted by Newfest, and will be followed by an after-party co-hosted by SALGA and Sholay.
Closing Night Film Sunday, November 14, 2010:
COOKING WITH STELLA, directed by Dilip Mehta and written by Deepti Mehta, is the story of Stella Elizabeth Matthews (Seema Biswas), who has been a cook in the Canadian High Commission in New Delhi for 30 years. She is brilliant as a cook and brilliant at creatively padding her salary. A newly-posted Canadian diplomat (Lisa Ray) and her husband Michael (Don McKellar) arrive with their baby (Alexiane Perreault). After an initial jolt when Stella learns that Michael will be staying home as diplomatic housewife while Maya goes off to work, everything goes swimmingly for Stella. Michael was a chef in Ottawa and is longing to learn authentic Indian cooking. Stella agrees to be his cooking guru. But Stellas cozy domestic set-up implodes when Tannu (Shriya Saran), an honest nanny, joins the household. Starring Seema Biswas, Lisa Ray, Don McKellar, and Shriya Saran, the film will be preceded by a red carpet event and followed by an awards ceremony and closing night party, all at the SVA Theater.
