Just recently when Bollywood actress Rani Mukerji's film 'Mardaani' released, there was a huge hue and cry on the film being labeled as a 'woman oriented' film.
Rani took a serious stand against the label stating that it is again discrimination if we divide films as a 'male dominated' or 'woman oriented' film.
She stated that their films shouldn't be labeled as that and hence she preferred to call it a thriller rather than baking on the feminism. And now a similar statement has come from Priyanka Chopra who is currently promoting her film 'Mary Kom'.
The biopic in which she plays the Indian Olympic Medalist, claims that she doesn't understand the difference. "I don't understand this term called 'women oriented films.' Why do we need to tag a female lead film as woman oriented?," she questioned.
To further substantiate her statement, she added that though she can't deny the nature of the patriarchal society, she is still not ready to accept this discrimination.
"Let's accept the fact that we live in a male oriented world, but it's only after we stop discriminating female oriented films that we can hope for them to do well. And things are changing now. There are films that are being written for us and we are not merely a prop in the films anymore," said Priyanka with a hint of pride in her tone.
She further added that she wants her films to do well on both commercial and critical front. "We call it movie business because, at the end of the day, it is business. We all want our movies to do well at the box office. And I need to do those masala pot-boilers to build my credibility at the BO and as an actor to be able to do films like Barfi! and Mary Kom. If I hadn't done a Don or a Krrish, that were multi crore films, I think the budget of my other films would have been totally different," said Priyanka who obviously has not only mastered the craft on screen but knows the business well off screen too.
