The actress, who is currently promoting drama The Whistleblower, said that while she has portrayed a number of characters who are brave enough to fight for a good cause, she doesn't believe movies should be seen as a "call to action".

In The Whistleblower, the 41-year-old portrays Kathryn Bolkovac, an American policewoman who served as a peacekeeper in post-war Bosnia and outed the United Nations for covering up a sex scandal.

"I think it's wonderful if art can inspire people, but I don't really see it as a piece of dogma or a call to action," she told The Los Angeles Times. "I see it as a celebration of this human being, who is more noble than most of us, who in circumstances where most people would turn a blind eye didn't. There's something about inspirational stories that give me hope that on planet Earth there are these extraordinary individuals who will make a difference, who will stand up for what is just and right."

The star also explained the difference in playing a fictional character and portraying a real person.

Speaking of her Whistleblower role, Rachel said she felt the need to do Kathryn and her personality justice.

"There's a responsibility the more I got to know Kathy, the more I wanted to honour her. She's got a real sense of humour, and I think there's a line in the film where my co-worker says, Why did you come here?' And I said, I heard the food was really great.' Obviously the food isn't great in war-torn Bosnia. That was an improv because I just tuned into Kathy. She's very dry and kind of fun," she said. (C) Cover Media
