Rani Mukerji, who has worked with close friend
Sanjay Leela Bhansali in the past, was the first choice Mary Kom's biopic. However, Rani declined the offer laying down unreasonable conditions.
Apparently, Rani, who has had bad experiences in the past with new directors
Anurag Singh in
'Dil Bole Hadippa' and
Sachin Kundalkar in
'Aiyyaa', was a little hesitant to get directed by newcomer
Omang Kumar.
It seems, when Omang came to Rani with the offer, she asked him to first shoot a few scenes with her. Only if she liked the scenes taken would she do the rest of the film with the debutant.
This suggestion clearly irked the director, after which he took the offer straight to
Priyanka Chopra, who bagged the golden opportunity.
