Rihanna: I question father relationship

16th March 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Rihanna has blasted her father in a new interview, saying hes made her question their relationship because he talks so freely about her.

The singer was assaulted by her then-boyfriend Chris Brown in 2009, resulting in him being sentenced to probation and being ordered to have domestic violence counselling. Following the incident Rihannas father Ronald Fenty gave a number of interviews discussing how worried he was about the situation and saying he was furious with Chris.

Rihanna and Ronald who is a recovering drug addict have a turbulent relationship. She had a tough childhood due to Ronalds substance abuse, and had to send him home from one of her tours due to his bad behaviour.

She has now spoken of her hurt that he discusses her personal issues in public, saying it has irrevocably harmed their relationship.

It really makes me question what I have become to my father. Like, what do I even mean to him? Its really strange. Thats the only word I can think of to describe it, because you grow up with your father, you know him, you are a part of him, for goodness sakes! And then he does something so bizarre that I cant begin to wrap my mind around it. You hear the horror stories about people going behind peoples backs and doing strange things, but you always think, 'Not my family. My father would never do that to me,' she told the April edition of US Vogue.

[After being assaulted by Chris Brown] that was the first time. My dad went to the press and just told them a bunch of lies. Because he hadnt talked to me after that whole thing he never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a check. And now he does it again. Now Im like, 'Whatever, I tried.'

Rihanna went on to discuss the assault and how it has changed her. The 23-year-old still cant believe it happened, but says one positive is the impact it had on her music. She now uses song writing to channel her emotions, which she never felt able to do before, and believes that had made her stronger as an artist.

It actually gave me a lot of liberation. What I mean is, I was able to tap into the personal part of my music. I started to tell stories through my music that were actually my stories. My album before that, there was still a little bit of protection, there was still an innocence to me. And what that time in my life did was kind of wake people up: Its not all a bed of roses. My life is like yours, she told the publication.

It made me look at the world in a much bigger way because my life was suddenly superduper magnified; all eyes were on me. I needed that in my life to know how to say, F**k off. To know how to keep my head high even in the worst of situations. I keep using the word unapologetic. But theres a freedom that has come with all of that. Where you feel like you dont have to make an excuse for being yourself.

Rihanna began dating baseball star Matt Kemp last year, but they are no longer together. She explained one of the reasons it didnt work is because shes wary of depending too much on romance and wants to have other things in her life. While she is still a great believer in love, the singer now knows its unhealthy to get too caught up in one person. (C) Cover Media
