Stars given VMA fashion advice

10th September 2010

(Cover) - EN Fashion - Celebrity stylist Derek Roche says many MTV Video Music Awards (VMAs) guests end up looking bad because they try to compete with Rihanna and Beyonc Knowles.

Derek has worked with a host of Hollywoods most glamorous faces in the past and recently offered his advice for those attending the prestigious awards ceremony this weekend. He thinks the key to looking good on the red carpet is keeping things simple and not trying to imitate unique style icons such as the pop stars Rihanna and Beyonc who are famed for their daring outfits.

"I think the easiest way is not to think. It's about simplicity," he told MTV.

"People think they have to go and be all dolled up and they have to compete with Rihanna and Beyonc and they have to compete with Puff Daddy. Don't!"

At this Sundays ceremony some of the music industrys most stylish women, including eccentric style gurus Lady Gaga and Katy Perry, will be in attendance.

Derek warns attendees there is nothing worse than looking as if youre desperate to look good, and argues stars such as Katy look perfect due to their effortless confidence.

"Just be who you are," he advised. It's all about being natural, and when you think about it too much and when you're trying to compete, you're always going to look like you're trying too hard."

The 27th annual MTV Video Music Awards will take place at the Los Angeles Nokia Theatre this Sunday. (C) Cover Media
