Tom Cruise "begged" Katie Holmes to give their marriage another chance, it has been reported.

The actor allegedly tried to convince his estranged wife to reconsider the split before it was made public and join him on set in Iceland to overcome their differences.

The star is currently filming the movie Oblivion in the country and wanted Katie to celebrate his 50th birthday with him in a last bid to patch things up.

"He begged her to go to Iceland for one last try at reconciliation. She refused and a huge fight ensued," a source told Us Weekly.

According to the insider, Tom branded the former Dawson's Creek star "heartless" for refusing to reconsider.

But the brunette beauty is said to be adamant that the relationship is over.

New reports have claimed that the couple had a series of rows before their break-up, mainly about raising six-year-old daughter Suri.

In one of them, Tom reportedly criticised Katie for allowing the little girl to wear make-up and nail varnish.

Meanwhile, Cruise's lawyer has revealed that the actor is "deeply saddened" by the marriage breakdown but will file a rival divorce petition.

"Tactically we can't say where Tom will file a divorce case and if he'll be seeking joint custody of Suri," Bret Fields said.

"We are letting 'the other side' [Katie Holmes and her team] play the media until they wear everyone out and then we'll have something to say. It's not Tom's style to do this publicly. He is really sad about what's happening."
