Will Gluck: Don't compare rival romantic comedies

19th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Movies - Will Gluck hopes audiences won't compare his new comedy, Friends with Benefits, to the similarly themed No Strings Attached.

The director is following up his acclaimed high school comedy Easy A with Friends with Benefits, which focuses on two pals, played by Justin Timberlake and Mila Kunis, who try to combine a physical relationship with just being friends. It's a similar plot line to the recent Ashton Kutcher and Natalie Portman comedy.

However, Will insists rival movies aren't rare in Hollywood, citing competing volcano movies that were released in 1997. He was so concentrated on making his movie he had no interest in the other comedy.

"And I really just want to say: I like No Strings Attached. I saw it; it was great," explained Will. "This is not No Strings Attached. We're different movies, different tones. People say, 'Wow, it's like Volcano and Dante's Peak.' OK Volcano and Dante's Peak happen once in a lifetime. This is about a guy and a girl meeting. This is not the second movie of the year to talk about this; this is 10,000th movie of the year to talk about this. People just hooked onto the titles. It's just a romance; that's it. It's not Volcano and Dante's Peak."

Friends with Benefits also stars Patricia Clarkson and Jenna Elfman and is due out in American on July 22. (C) Cover Media
