Alanis Morissette says writing about her eating disorders helps her to be "kind toward her fragility".
The singer has always had a troublesome relationship with food.
She battled eating disorders bulimia and anorexia when she was a teenager. The star has also struggled to maintain a consistent weight since being in the public eye, after personal traumas have affected the way she feels about food.
Alanis turned to comfort food and put on weight after her split from Ryan Reynolds.
The 37-year-old star has discussed the way she feels about food on her blog for iVillage.
"My fraught relationship with food and fat has always been a cloaked invitation into a more profound kindness to myself one I have so often ignored," she wrote.
"Being kind toward my fragility in the face of a monolithic message of perfectionism and intolerance has not been an easy path - nor, I'm ashamed to say, a consistent one. Writing about it helps."
Alanis is now happily married to rapper Mario MC Souleye' Treadway, and the pair have an 11-month-old son, Ever Imre, together.
Alanis says her state of mind directly impacts the way she feels about food, and admits her previous struggles were due to her trying to bury her feelings.
"There are often traumas and abuses/neglect that are begging to be healed. Fat can be a way to protect ourselves and survive, a way to control something in a world where everything feels out of control, and a way to stave off profound fear of feeling our feelings," she explained.
"I often find anxiety, fear, boredom, disappointment, loneliness, excitement and grief to be the top feelings food can attempt to prevent."
