(Cover) - EN Movies - Bridesmaids has overtaken Sex and the City to become the biggest adult rated female comedy of all time at the US box office.

The surprise box office smash has now taken over $153 million in the US. And the comedy, which features Kristen Wiig attempting to cope with her maid of honour duties, is now the most successful R-rated female comedy ever. Sex and the City earned $152.6 million.

The success of Bridesmaids has been welcome news for Universal. They had been desperate for a breakout hit following several underperforming movies recently such as Matt Damon's The Adjustment Bureau and Vince Vaughn comedy The Dilemma. The studio also revealed that it's their biggest romantic comedy of all time.

Bridesmaids is also comedy producer Judd Apatow's biggest hit, overtaking other films he has previously worked on including Knocked Up and Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby.
