Cars 2 tops US box office

(Cover) - EN Movies - Cars 2 surpassed expectations by grossing $68 million at US box offices this weekend.

The Disney/Pixar animation is the sequel to 2006 hit Cars, and sees champion race car Lightning McQueen and his pal Mater travel abroad to compete in the World Grand Prix race.

Directed by John Lasseter and featuring the voices of stars such as Owen Wilson, Michael Caine and Emily Mortimer, the movie in fact beat the $60.1 million debut of its 2006 predecessor.

Meanwhile, second place this week went to comedy Bad Teacher, which grossed $31 million this weekend. The movie stars Cameron Diaz as a foul-mouthed teacher who is desperate to seduce one of her colleagues, and was directed by Jake Kasdan.

Martin Campbell-directed action movie Green Lantern came in third after earning $18,350,000. The superhero release stars Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds.

Other films in the US box office top ten this weekend included sci-fi thriller Super 8 and family comedy Mr. Popper's Penguins at number four and five respectively. X-Men: First Class and The Hangover Part II are also still doing well. (C) Cover Media
