Charlize Theron has "adopted a child."

The 36-year-old Oscar winner's representative confirmed the news to People magazine today.

This is the first child for the South African-born star.

"She is the proud mom of a healthy baby boy named Jackson," her publicist said in a statement.

The age of the child or when she brought him home has not yet been revealed.

The actress split from long term boyfriend Stuart Townsend in 2010 after nine years together and said last year that marriage was "never something that was important [to me]."

Charlize took home an Academy Award for her role as serial killer Aileen Wuornos in 2003 movie Monster.

She next stars as the evil queen in upcoming film Snow White and the Huntsman.
