Chris Evans pursued for superhero role

15th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Chris Evans was forced to play Captain America by Marvel Studios, explaining the "more [he] walked away the more they pursued".

The actor, who has also played The Human Torch in Marvel's The Fantastic Four, was reluctant to play the iconic superhero, citing reasons such as wanting to do something different in his career and baulking at the original nine picture deal that was required of him. However, Marvel refused to take no for an answer and did everything they could to get their man for forthcoming blockbuster Captain America: The First Avenger.

"I got a call and they said they want me to audition, and I said, 'Great!' And then I thought about it and I said, 'No thanks.' And then they called back and they said, 'Well, they want you to test,' and testing is basically they'll draw up a contract, and if you're testing then you're only testing with a couple other guys and the odds of walking away with it drastically increase. And again I just said, 'I think I'm good. This isn't really what I'm looking for.'"

However, after Marvel cut the nine picture deal to six and Chris met director Joe Johnston and studio chief Kevin Feige he finally relented.

"It just seemed like the more I walked away the more they pursued," he said.

Chris also added that there is "no turning back now" in playing the iconic character a part he will reprise for superhero team up epic The Avengers.

"[Playing] Captain America just changes things, and there's really no off switch once you walk down that road," Evans explained. "I'm just trying to make all the negatives positives and just enjoy the ride." (C) Cover Media
