Daniel Radcliffe: I needed alcohol to have fun

4th July 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Daniel Radcliffe feels he "got away" with leading a wild party lifestyle as a teen.

The 21-year-old British actor is famed for playing the title character in the hugely successful Harry Potter film franchise about life at a school for witches and wizards.

Daniel began his acting career at the age of ten, and admits growing up in the public eye meant he went off the rails when he turned 18. He is relieved that the majority of his partying was never captured on camera though.

"I became so reliant on [alcohol] to enjoy stuff," he confessed.

"There were a few years there when I was just so enamoured with the idea of living some sort of famous person's lifestyle that really isn't suited to me.

"I really got away with that because there were many instances when a shot like that [of him drunk] could have been taken."

Daniel is now teetotal, having not drunk alcohol since last August. The actor, believed to be dating millionaire's daughter Olive Uniacke, is content with his quiet lifestyle.

"As much as I would love to be a person that goes to parties and has a couple of drinks and has a nice time, that doesn't work for me. I do that very unsuccessfully. I'd just rather sit at home and read, or talk to somebody that makes me laugh. There's no shame in enjoying the quiet life. And that's been the realisation of the past few years for me," he told GQ.

"I'm actually enjoying the fact I can have a relationship with my girlfriend where I'm really pleasant and I'm not f**king up totally all the time."

Daniel also reflected on the future of his career. The actor is the star of upcoming thriller The Woman in Black set for release in 2012 and argues that he can challenge the stereotype of failed child stars.

"If I can make a career for myself after Potter, and it goes well, and is varied and with longevity, then that puts to bed the 'child actors argument'," he mused.

"If I can do it, in the biggest film franchise of all time, no other child actor who comes after will ever have to answer those same bl**dy questions." (C) Cover Media
