(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Derek Hough is reportedly vying for the lead role in an upcoming remake of Dirty Dancing.
The American dancer-and-choreographer is eager to play dancer Johnny Castle in the musical remake, a part made famous by the late Patrick Swayze.
Derek wants to tackle the big screen portrayal of the hunky dancer who becomes romantically involved with a naive dance student.
"Derek really wants Patrick Swayze's old role. He saw it did wonders for Swayze's career and wants to repeat the magic," a source told British newspaper The Sun.
"He's a brilliant dancer but hasn't much acting experience which worries him."
Derek faces competition from a host of other stars including Dominic Cooper, Chace Crawford and Matthew Morrison.
Miley Cyrus, Demi Lovato and Glee's Lea Michele are all apparently being considered for the part of student Frances Baby' Houseman.
Kenny Ortega choreographed Dirty Dancing and it's been confirmed he will direct the remake to mark the original's 25th anniversary next year.
"Patrick Swayze set the bar for men dancing in the movies as Gene Kelly and Fred Astaire did before him," he said in a statement.
"I believe everywhere you look there is evidence that the talent is out there and I can't wait to begin the process of discovering the next breakout triple-threats."
Dirty Dancing won Academy Awards for best music and best original song for (I've Had) The Time of My Life, and inspired a hit stage show in London and six other countries.
It starred Patrick and Jennifer Grey in the lead roles. (C) Cover Media
