Desiclub.com has been publishing its "Top 50" list since 2004 and showcases the powerful and positive impact of South Asians the world over.
It is both an honor and a privilege to be able to include notable members of our global community in our annual showcase of successful and admirable South Asians. This year's inductees include one of the very few remaining authentic journalists in the mainstream, Fareed Zakaria, Actors Kal Penn and Irrfan Khan, Cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, Comedians Russell Peters and Aziz Ansari and recently elected Governor Nikki Haley of South Carolina and Attorney General Kamala Harris of California, two of the many Americans of Indian-origin who now hold public office, a testament to the ultimate presence of South Asians in the United States.
We have been at it for seven years now, so would it be immodest to claim the inspiration for all other lists that have come along? Be it the 30 Under 30s, 40 Under 40s and all other yearenders as of recent. It doesn't hurt to claim recognition for expanding on a wonderful idea and setting a benchmark.
From ruling a democracy to unraveling the mysteries of the universe, Desis have been at it all, designing robots to ease our lives and what not. And of course how could we miss a large group of entertainers, some known names and some new, who have rightfully claimed their spots after making their space in the public consciousness ala the cast of "Outsourced" - the wonderfully brilliant and funny new NBC show, which makes light of stereotypical Indians in call centers with witty lines and deeply penetrating Indian jokes, which everyone gets. Talk about bridging the mainstream - we are the mainstream!
