Diane Kruger: I fight for film roles

16th February 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Diane Kruger still fights for any role she wants, as she finds it hard to win the kind of parts shes interested in.

The German star was a ballerina as a girl, but an injury stopped her dance career at a young age. She then became a successful model, but thinks that has hampered her move into films.

She credits appearing in Quentin Tarantinos gritty war movie Inglourious Basterds with helping turn around her fortune. She played actress Bridget von Hammersmark who was also a spy, and since shooting the 2009 release Diane has seen the quality of parts shes offered improve. She can soon be seen in Unknown, in which she portrays a brutal character called Gina. The movie also features January Jones, as the beautiful and quaint Elizabeth Harris, and Diane is happy she was asked to play the edgier role.

I still do fight. Getting the stuff you want to make is never easy for anybody, no matter how famous you are. Its a little easier, every time you make a film and its successful. It gets a little easier, at least for a short period of time. So it just is what it is, she said, when asked how she secures the movies shes interested in.

Inglourious Basterds helped make a change in the sense of what kind of part I could get offered or at least be considered for. I really think if I hadnt done Inglourious Basterds, I might have been considered for the part January plays. And its a good part, but its certainly something Ive done before. Mine is a much more complex part, in terms of the layers.

The 34-year-old knows her appearance helped her break into Hollywood, but insists it isnt the reason shes achieved success. Diane believes good looks only get a person so far, as soon they will be called on to prove their talent.

That said, she admits women are judged on their figures in Hollywood, something she hates.

Even if youre the most unattractive person, by giving a performance that is emotional you become, on screen, literally the most beautiful person, she told Stylist.

Im not here [in Los Angeles] the whole time. I live in Europe a lot which definitely helps keep me sane, This is such a weird job, because you constantly find yourself up against people that say no to you [when youre auditioning] all the time. Thats what makes the job so difficult. And then when they actually do say yes, you forget it all. But in Hollywood you just have to walk down the block. A lot of dreams have been crushed here, so you have to be really strong. (C) Cover Media
