"No one flunks acting." That was the sentence that changed the life of an aspiring doctor, who turned to acting.
Dustin Lee Hoffman the actor, who originally aimed to become a successful doctor, changed the face of cinema with his versatality in portraying anti-heroes, is turning 74 today.
Born on 8th August, 1937, in Los Angeles, he did small roles on television in the initial days of his acting career. With no progress in his pace, he got frustrated and decided to leave acting, to teach but suddenly he won a role in the off-Broadway production 'Yes Is for a Very Young Man'.
Still his career wasn't progressing and he virtually disappeared from the public eye. He soon became a dedicated method actor and went on to win the Best Actor Obie for his work in 'The Journey of the Fifth Horse'. In 1967 Hoffman made his film debut with a tiny role in the feature 'The Tiger Makes Out'. After this there was no looking back, so much that he went on to win the second "Best Actor" Oscar for his performance in 'Rain Man'.
Hoffman was known to get in to trouble with his directors and yet he was a man of perfection and his spats didn't affect his work. Winning several awards and accolades in his career, the name Dustin Hoffman has become a household one, with his comic performances in 'Meet the Fockers' and 'Stranger than Fiction'.
