George Clooney: Alcohol cures awards anxiety

16th January 2012

George Clooney has joked he likes getting "hammered" before presenting awards.

The Hollywood hunk was at last night's Golden Globes ceremony in Los Angeles, where he picked up the best actor in a drama for The Descendants.

While walking the red-carpet at the event, George explained the tricks he usually uses to get through such evenings.

"You do start drinking. I have and there's nothing better than being really drunk and presenting. I'm presenting 'Moneyball' with Brad [Pitt], so I should be pretty hammered when I get out there," he laughed to Extra.

The star also admitted rumours he is creating his own brand of tequila are true.

"Yeah, we're starting a little tequila company," he said. "We're working on it, not there yet. It's going to be fun, I think."

Brad Pitt was also in the running for the best drama actor prize for his role in Moneyball. He and George are famously good friends and had been discussing the category before the ceremony.

"Brad and I were talking the other day and I realized I'm the oldest guy in the category, which has never happened before," George told ET. "And it actually started to depress the hell out of me."

Although the 50-year-old might have been stressed about his nomination, he was in good spirits on the night. He took to the stage leaning heavily on a cane in reference to Brad's recent accident which left him limping.

"I have to give it back to him," George joked. "He can't make it to the bar otherwise."

Although happy to poke fun at his friend, he also singled him out as a source of inspiration during his acceptance speech.

"I wanted to say it's nice to see Brad, and it's nice to be able to tell him not just what wonderful work he's doing in two films this year," George said. "But what wonderful work he does in the rest of the world to the rest of the people."

The actor didn't only tease Brad during the event. He also found time to gently mock Michael Fassbender, who plays a sex addict in the new movie Shame.

"I'd like to thank Michael Fassbender for taking over the frontal-nudity responsibility that I had," he deadpanned. "Michael, honestly, you can play golf like this with your hands behind your back. Go for it, man. Do it."
