George Clooney says he doesn't "give a s**t" that people think he is gay.

The 50-year-old Oscar winner has been plagued with reports that he is secretly homosexual.

But the Hollywood heartthrob tells The Advocate that he is secure within himself and there are worse things in the world people could say about him.

"I think it's funny, but the last thing you'll ever see me do is jump up and down saying, These are lies!'" he said of being called gay.

"That would be unfair and unkind to my good friends in the gay community.

"I'm not going to let anyone make it seem like being gay is a bad thing. My private life is private, and I'm very happy in it."

The Descendants star further stated that the rumours will probably continue long after he is gone.

"Who does it hurt if someone thinks I'm gay?" he questioned. "I'll be long dead and there will still be people who say I was gay. I don't give a s**t."

George, who is currently dating former WWE wrestler Stacy Keibler, is set to appear in a one-night-only reading of Dustin Lance Black's Prop 8 play about the legalisation of same-sex marriage.

He will star alongside Martin Sheen, Matt Bomer, Jamie Lee Curtis and Glee star Matthew Morrison.

"One day the marriage equality fight will look as archaic as George Wallace standing on the University of Alabama steps keeping James Hood from attending college because he was black," George added.

"People will be embarrassed to have been on the wrong side. So it's encouraging to know that this too will seem like such a silly argument to our next generation."
