Ghazal King Jagjit Singh passes away

10th October 2011

Legendary Ghazal singer Jagjit Singh passed away, at 8 am in the Lilavati Hospital on Monday morning. Jagjit Singh was admitted to the Hospital on September 23 after he suffered brain hemorrhage at his home. He is survived by his wife Chitra Singh, with whom he had produced several record breaking albums. Their only son Vivek Singh had died in a road accident in 1990.

Jagjit Singh was not just a singer, but also a composer, activist and an entrepreneur. Hailing from Rajasthan, he rose to fame along with his wife Chitra Singh in the 1970s and 1980s as the first ever successful duo in the history of recorded Indian music. He entered the music circuit at the time when Indian Ghazal singers were considered less authentic as compared to their Pakistani counterparts. But Jagjit Singh revolutionized the Gazal scenario in Indian music. He not only believed in preserving this traditional art form, but also never hesitated to adopt a modern approach to it with the fusion of technology. He was the first Indian music director to use the technique of multi-track recording for his album 'Beyond Time'. He even lent his voice to films like 'Arth', 'Prem Geet' and 'Saath Saath'. His Ghazals "Hosh Walon Ko Khabar Kya" from Sarfarosh and "Badi Nazuk Hai" from Joggers’ Park are still popular and are hummed by elders and youngsters alike.

Recipient of Padmashri and Padma Bhushan awards, he has sung in several languages including Hindi, Urdu, Punjabi and Nepali.

The Ghazal King who created some very beautiful music will surely be dearly missed. We at Fridaymoviez pay a tribute to the Legend of Ghazal... Jagjit Singh!
