Dharmendra Singh Deol popularly known as the "He - Man" of Bollywood is celebrating his 76th birthday today. Dharmendra was born on 8th December 1935, into a Jat family in the Kapurthala district of Punjab, India. His parents
are Keshwant Singh Deol and Satwant Kaur. His father was a head school master at a school in Ludhiana. Dharmendra spent his childhood at his native place Sahnewal in Ludhiana.
Also known as 'Garam Dharam' Dharmendra has acted in more than 200 Bollywood films over a period of four decades.
Dharmendra was considered as the most handsome actor in Bollywood during the peak of his career. He had the looks of a real gentle man, the masculine body of a he-man and when it came to his films, he had a very humorous touch in his dialog-delivery and the timing, especially. His performances in the films- 'Phool Aur Patthar' , 'Jugnu' ,'Raja Jani' and 'Loafer ' are all quite remarkable and unforgettable.
And not to forget his quite unbelievable performance he'd shown in the role he played as "Veeru" in Sholay (1975). And who can forget his dialog delivery in this movie, whether it was with Basanti or his famous "suicide" dialog. Dharmendra has been married twice. In 1954, when Dharmendra was just 19 years old, he married Prakask Kaur. He has four children with her, two sons, actors, Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol and two daughters, Vijeeta and Ajeeta.
On the sets of 'Sholay' , Dharmendra fell in love with Hema Malini, his co-star in many films. Dharmendra got married to Hema Malini. Dharmendra has two daughters from Hema Malini, Esha Deol, who is an actress and Ahana Deol.
He won the filmfare new talent award and came to Mumbai from Punjab looking for work. Starting with Arjun Hingorani in 'Dil Bhi Tera Hum Bhi Tere'. He has also worked in romantic black and white films in early 60s,hitting solo hero stardom with Phool Aur Patthar (1966). He was also known by a nick name "Garam Dharam" as he was one of the only few male sex symbols of the 60's 70's and 80's. In fact, a scene in 'Phool Aur Patthar' where he takes off his shirt to cover the ailing heroine was one of the highlights of the movie. Movies started flowing and he became one of the most sought out actors in bollywood in late 60s and 70s.
Many memorable performances and big movies include Dharmendra as the main star. His most notable acting performance is 'Satyakam' with Hrishikesh Mukherjee. Though he and his films got nominated for Filmfare awards and though he couldn't get one for his films, he, in the end, has got the best award in his life - "The Life Time Achievement" award in 1997 from Filmfare for his achievements, splendid performance during his times and wonderful career in Bollywood.
He was the real action hero of perfection in his days and is still considered to be the best romantic hero and the best
romantic pair with the actress Hema Malini. Dharmendra still continues to make appearances in movies every once in a while.
