(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Dame Helen Mirren says she loathes chick flicks.
The 65-year-old British actress is one of the industrys most respected women, having gained the best actress Oscar for her portrayal of Britains Queen Elizabeth II in 2006 movie The Queen.
Helen has had a varied career, appearing in films ranging from action to comedy, although she insists she cannot abide slushy romantic movies targeting young females.
I loathe, I hate, chick flicks, the actress revealed.
The actress understands why this particular genre does so well, but thinks female cinemagoers should think more wisely before settling down to watch a girly film. The star believes movie executives dont need to put a great deal of effort into creating mushy films specifically for women as they know that is what they will go and see, whereas they focus their hard work on attracting male cinemagoers.
I think women as an audience have to take responsibility, she told British newspaper The Daily Telegraph.
Its the film industry in America. Its not the film art. Its not the world of art. It can be very artistic. But a film, unlike a painting, or even a piece of music, certainly a novel, is an incredibly expensive thing to produce.
And they know that the people that drive cinema-going are young men and their girlfriends. But its the young men who choose the movie. Girls go out together to see a chick flick or something.
The star also discussed her status as a mature pin-up. The beautiful actress used to dislike being recognised for her good looks as she wanted to be taken seriously, although nowadays she has a more relaxed approach.
I dont think about it. I dont consider it. Its always been with me one way or the other. Its like the wind blowing past. It was a pain in the butt when I was younger, she explained. But I dont mind as much anymore. (C) Cover Media
