Hugh Jackman: My wife advised against X-Men

5th May 2011

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Hugh Jackman says the only time his wife has been wrong was when she tossed aside the script for X-Men.

The Australian actor made his big-screen breakthrough as Wolverine in the hugely popular X-Men series. He was cast as the mutant character in the Bryan Singer-directed comic book franchise in 2000, and has since gone on to enjoy international movie success.

The hunky star says his wife Deborra-Lee Furness, who he has been married to for 15 years, initially told him to ignore auditions for the part. It was the first time in their marriage that he decided to ignore her advice, and hes pleased he did.

First of all, my wife, who is an actress, she always reads with me before an audition, so she had the part, the script and shes reading the description and she said, This is ridiculous, you cant be doing this! and she threw it down, and I was like, You know what? I think theres something to it, Im going to go for it, and she said, Youre on your own, he explained in an interview with SHN. Its the only time shes ever been wrong.

The 42-year-old believes he owes his global success to the movie because it opened doors for relatively unknown actors at the time. He can still remember events leading up to him landing the part.

X-Men was the very first film I did in America. Id done a few films in Australia. I was in London doing Oklahoma, a musical, and this world-wide call went out to audition for Wolverine. They believed at the studio that they had a star brand with X-Men so for once they felt they didnt need a star actor, so they went out for unknowns, he said. I probably did six or seven auditions, and finally nine months after my auditions, I got the part, and thats where it all changed for me. (C) Cover Media
