Johnny Depp wants intimate theatre role

17th December 2010

(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Johnny Depp would love to perform Shakespeare in a very tiny theatre.

The talented actor has enjoyed a hugely successful movie career, although he admits he has aspirations to do more theatre work.

Johnnys dream role would be playing Hamlet in the play of the same name by British playwright William Shakespeare.

He initially was attracted to the role a long time ago, when now-deceased Hollywood icon Marlon Brando recommended it to him. Johnny wouldnt like his Shakespearean venture to be on a large scale though, and thinks he will opt for something more low-key.

Hamlet is one of those actor clich things that bounces around in your head. Many years ago, Marlon Brando planted that seed in my skull and said, 'Kid, you really should play Hamlet before you get too long in the tooth'.

He never got to play it, and so he kept hammering me to just take off, forget movies, and go do it, he explained.

And so I've thought about it more and more lately; the thing I'd like to do with Hamlet is to do it as under the radar as possible, in a very tiny theatre, and if it caught on then you could just move it somewhere else, to a rec [recreational] hall somewhere.

The actor was discussing his ideas in an interview with British newspaper The Independent, and the interviewer remarked that he appeared to be speaking with a Northern British accent. Johnny confessed the change in voice tone was related to a possible movie part, although he didnt want to reveal any more. He laughed that whenever he starts researching new roles, he cant resist slipping into the characters accent.

Well, I have been talking to someone about a character I might play. It's horrible because it sort of seeps in and starts to take root, he smiled. (C) Cover Media
