The 43-year-old American moviemaker worked as producer on the comedy, which has been storming the US box office since it opened in cinemas on May 13.

The film tells the story of lovelorn Annie, played by Kristen Wiig, who is asked to be maid of honour for her best friend, and stars a string of talented actresses such as Rose Byrne, Ellie Kemper and Melissa McCarthy.

Judd says he always knew the movie would triumph, and is confident it will prove just how well females can do comedy.

"I always hoped that there was this huge neglected audience out there hoping someone would start making movies for them," he told MTV News.

"I am so excited I was not imagining things. Hopefully this will lead to a lot more movies being made starring funny women."

Judd is proud that the film showcases rising talent such as Ellie and Melissa, and has tipped big things for them in the future. He doesnt want people to only focus on the films comedy elements though, as he believes there is a heartfelt story too.

"I think people appreciate the fact that it is crazy funny, but is also a very sweet story about female friendship," he added. "And it is always fun to see new hilarious comedy stars. People like it like they like discovering a new band." (C) Cover Media
