The actress plays Jules in The Kids Are All Right, with Annette Bening portraying Jules partner Nic. The couple both use the same sperm donor to have one child each and as the kids grow up they decide to track down their biological father, Paul played by Mark Ruffalo. Jules and Paul form a close bond, and Julianne likes the way the movie deals with the question of sexuality.

I think its important not to be divisive about sexuality. Basically were all human beings and who we chose to be with as partners or romantically, at the end of the day, doesnt make a lot of difference, she said. You love who you love, and thats alright. In this case, in the film, he is hardly a threat to their relationship, I actually think had it been a woman it would have been much more threatening. Julianne could have played either Jules or Nic, but chose her character as she found her so interesting. She likes the struggle Jules is going through, and thinks women across the world will relate to her.

I loved Jules, I think its very unusual to see a character whose drama isnt articulated in that way. In most films, its laid out for you, this is what the characters problem is and this is how shes going to solve it, and lifes not that way, she told the BBC. This is a woman whose life is changing dramatically because her kids are growing up and going to college. Shes been an at home mom so shes like, Who am I?
