(Cover) - EN Showbiz - Lady Gaga has joined an elite group of stars to have sold a million copies of an album in one week.
The 25-year-old pop sensation released her latest record Born This Way on May 23, and album-sales tracker Nielsen SoundScan has now revealed 1.11 million copies of the album were sold during its first full week in stores.
This makes Born This Way the 17th album to sell a million copies in only a week since the SoundScan began back in 1991.
According to reports, the success has totally superseded expectations. Apparently early estimates were that Born This Way would sell below 500,000, although this was raised when the buzz surrounding the record grew and grew.
Online purchases are believed to have had a big impact on the high sales, as 60 per cent of the album's first week total sales were made on the internet.
Gaga now joins the likes of 50 Cent and Taylor Swift in selling a million copies so quickly the latter's latest album Speak Now sold 1.05 million copies back in November. The star still hasn't beaten boyband 'N Sync though, as their album No Strings Attached sold 2.42 million records during its first week of release in 2000. (C) Cover Media
