Lucy Liu says that her casting in the US remake of Sherlock Holmes is "different and exciting".

It was recently revealed that the actress has been cast as Joan Watson for CBS show Elementary, which offers a modern interpretation of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's detective novels.

The role of Dr. Watson is traditionally played by men, and the stunning star is thrilled with the casting twist.

"Whether it succeeds or fails, I feel I'm doing something different and exciting," she explained in an interview with BBC Newsbeat.

Describing her part in the series as "turning it on its head in a very big way", Lucy says she is eager to put her own spin on the role.

"For me it's about pushing forward. Playing a role that has been historically a male figure and also something that is obviously lore because it is very English-based," she said.

"I think for someone who is an Asian-American actress playing Watson that's something I always like to do - push the envelope."

The detective series will be set in modern day New York City.

The new show follows the success of the quirky BBC series Sherlock, starring Benedict Cumberbatch in the title role with Martin Freeman as his side kick, John Watson.

Lucy is best known for her role in 2002 movie Charlie's Angels alongside Hollywood beauties Drew Barrymore and Cameron Diaz.
