(Cover) - EN Movies - Madonna's latest directorial offering has been picked up for US distribution.

It was announced yesterday that W.E., which follows the relationship between Britain's King Edward VIII and American divorcee Wallis Simpson, has been acquired by The Weinstein Co. (TWC).

W.E. stars Abbie Cornish, Oscar Isaac, Laurence Fox, James Fox, James D'Arcy, Andrea Riseborough and Richard Coyle.

Harvey Weinstein, who is co-chairman of TWC, is thrilled to be involved with Madonna's new project and is confident it will be a hit.

"Madonna has really come into her own as a filmmaker with W.E.," Weinstein said. "She's taken one of the most famous romances of the 20th century and brought it to life in a smart, sexy and thoroughly modern way. It's a terrific addition to our US release slate."

The historical romantic drama was also co-written and co-produced by Madonna. The star is looking forward to fans seeing the movie, revealing she has put a great deal of effort into the independently made picture.

"W.E. is about the nature of true love, and the sacrifices and compromises that are often made. I've wanted to tell this story for a very long time, and bringing it to life has been a great adventure for me. I'm looking forward to working with Harvey and The Weinstein Co. on this film," Madonna said in a statement. (C) Cover Media
