Martin Campbell: Origin films are tough

(Cover) - EN Movies - Martin Campbell says origin stories are "very difficult" to create.

The director, who is best known for helming Bond movies Casino Royale and GoldenEye, is currently promoting his upcoming movie Green Lantern.

The superhero movie, based on the DC Comics character of the same name, stars Ryan Reynolds as Hal Jordan. The story follows Hal, a test pilot for the United States Air Force, who becomes the first ever earthman to be inducted into the Green Lantern Corps.

Martin says the difficulty of creating an "origin" movie is sometimes overlooked.

"The thing you need to be aware of it that origin stories are very difficult, whether it be a Bond or a Green Lantern," he revealed in an interview with SciFi Now. "Particularly with Green Lantern, there are so many rules. There are so many things to learn about the character and the property. I hadn't done a superhero movie before, and Green Lantern is a very complex character. On top of that, he goes to another planet."

Martin owes the realistic elements of the science fiction film to his team. The New Zealand filmmaker says the writers and producers worked hard to maintain an "honest" feel to the futuristic film.

"In order to put [the science fiction elements] across, you do need to have a very talented writer, and we were very lucky with Greg Berlanti," he gushed. "And Donald De Line is a very hands-on producer. He has worked extremely hard to keep the story as honest to the Green Lantern legend as possible." (C) Cover Media
